Are You Storing Your Food In The Fridge Correctly? 10 Rules For Preserving It Better

A well-thought-out storage system in your fridge doesn’t only preserve your food better, it also helps the fridge to work properly, stopping you from wasting electricity! Here are a few tips for storing your food correctly.

1. On the middle shelves it is best to store eggs, cheese, cold meats and leftovers, well-sealed in clean containers.

2. The drawers at the bottom are perfect for fruit and vegetables.

3. Milk, water and soft drinks should be put in the compartment in the door of the fridge.

4. Meat should be stored on the shelf above the vegetable drawers. Before putting it in, seal it in food bags: slices of beef last around 3 days, and mince should be eaten within 24 hours.

5. Fish, after being cleaned, should be put in special bags (or between two plates) and placed on the medium-high shelves of the fridge. Eat it within 24 hours.

6. Cheeses and dairy products should be protected with a sheet of aluminium foil and put on a medium-high shelf. Once open, close the packaging well, because they absorb odours, and eat within 2 days.

7. Cold meats should be left in the paper they were wrapped in in the shop, and placed in the same area as the cheeses.

8. Eggs have their own special place in the door of the fridge. You can also put sauces and butter on these shelves in the door.

9. Fruit and vegetables are stored in the designated drawers at the bottom of the fridge: it is a good idea to put them in paper bags, which let the air circulate and therefore prevent mould and deterioration.

10. Don’t put food in the fridge when it is still hot, because it raises the general temperature, leading to higher energy costs.
